Russian police dismantled another international romance scam ring

Yoshkar-Ola, Russia, 2002. The Russian police dismantled another international romance scam ring that siphoned money from American, Canadian and Austrian victims. Several complaints sent by foreign citizens were received by the Ministry of the Interior of the Russian Federation. The victims informed that they had been in correspondence with Russian females over the Internet. The women supposedly wanted to marry foreigners abroad and asked duped by love victims to send them considerable sums of money via Western Union to cover their travel expenses. After collecting remitments, virtual "brides" disappeared.
As it turned out later, the ring was run by two Russian programmers from a private flat in Yoshkar-Ola. They used profiles and personal data of their female friends to interact with foreigners and withdraw money from Western Union. Four suspects - 2 males and 2 females whose personal data had been involved - were arrested in connection with this case. Ural.ru.
