Organised gang of conmans sentenced in Yoshkar-Ola

Yoshkar-Ola, Russia, 2010. Ten members of a group of dating scammers were sentenced up to 4 years in prison. They were active from 2005 to 2007 in the city of Yoshkar-Ola and its neighborhood Medvedevo where their multiple "offices" were located.

The conmans hired around 15 employees to maintain conversations under fake female profiles with foreigners interested in dating Russian women. The emploees had been working in shifts to provide service 24 hours a day. The victims were lured into sending up to 4 000 USD to their supposed Russian "girlfriends" under different excuses.

The proved damage overpassed 9 million rubles (300 000 USD) and 412 foreign victims - mostly U.S. citizens - were reported. The police in collaboration with the FSB and American colleagues raided and shut down 14 offices where more than 100 PC and 10 satellite phones were confiscated. 60 alleged conmans were arrested.

Alexey Trushkov (1981) considered to be one of the ringleaders was given 4 years in prison. Also he had to pay 10 000 rubles (300 USD) fine. His 9 complices avoided going to jail. Instead they received conditional sentences and 5 000 rubles (150 USD) fines and were released on probation. The rest of the conmans at the time were under investigation. They were sentenced later.
